Capsular Contracture: Patient Awareness Checklist

A patient awareness checklist for breast implant surgery

Use this patient checklist to understand possible causes, device handling, surgical sterility and ask questions to ask your surgeon.

Have you been told that capsular contracture is simply your body's natural reaction to a breast implant?

The body's healing response does play a role. But the exact cause of capsular contracture is not fully understood, and several factors may contribute.

Before and after breast implant surgery, here are some things every patient should know.

Your patient awareness checklist

1. Understand your body's response

☐ A thin capsule of scar tissue normally forms around a breast implant.

☐ Capsular contracture occurs when that capsule tightens abnormally.

☐ It is not always possible to identify one specific cause.

2. Ask about infection prevention

☐ Bacterial contamination and biofilm have been investigated as possible contributors to capsular contracture.

☐ Appropriate sterile technique and infection-control practices matter.

☐ The absence of obvious infection does not establish that bacterial involvement is impossible.

3. Ask about insertion devices

☐ Is the breast implant insertion device labelled for single use?

☐ Is it being used according to the manufacturer's instructions?

☐ Do you understand the difference between using a device for both breasts during one operation and reusing it for another patient?

Single-use devices should be used in accordance with their intended purpose and manufacturer's instructions.

4. Consider the surgical environment

☐ Will my surgery take place in an appropriately equipped and licensed facility?

☐ Does the facility follow established infection-prevention and environmental maintenance standards?

☐ Are implant handling and sterile procedures properly managed?

5. Consider your surgeon's experience

☐ Is my surgeon appropriately qualified and experienced in breast implant surgery?

☐ Have we discussed the possible complications, including capsular contracture?

☐ Do I understand the treatment options if a complication occurs?

6. If capsular contracture develops

☐ Ask your surgeon to assess the severity and possible contributing factors.

☐ Ask whether implant rupture, infection, fluid collection or other problems need to be investigated.

☐ Discuss treatment options and the possibility of recurrence.

The takeaway

Capsular contracture is not simply a story about your body.

Your biological response matters, but so do other potential contributing factors, including infection prevention, device handling, surgical technique and the operating environment.

No implant, surgeon or surgical technique can guarantee that capsular contracture will never occur. Equally, developing it does not automatically mean that your body rejected the implant or that someone made a mistake.

Patients deserve to understand the risks and feel comfortable asking questions.

Be informed. Ask questions. Make confident decisions.
