Challenges with Sizing your Medical Compression Wear

When Body Proportions Don't Match the Standard Size Chart

Sometimes a patient's waist-to-hip or hip-to-waist ratio does not match the standard proportions used in an off-the-rack garment sizing guide.

For example, the garment may fit appropriately around the tummy, which is the primary area requiring compression, but appear slightly looser around the thighs.

n this situation, it is important to understand what area the garment is primarily intended to support and compress.

If the tummy is the area of focus, the fit around the tummy should be given appropriate priority rather than automatically choosing a smaller garment simply because the thighs appear looser. Going down a size to make the thighs tighter could result in excessive compression around the tummy — potentially making the garment uncomfortable or inappropriate for the patient.

This does not mean the thighs should be ignored. The entire garment should still be assessed to ensure that it sits correctly, provides appropriate support and does not create excessive folds, gaps or pressure points.

The key is to understand that not every part of a patient's body will necessarily match the garment's standard proportions perfectly.

A good fitting therefore asks:

“Where is the compression needed, and does the garment provide the appropriate support in that area?”

Rather than simply:

“Is every part of the garment equally tight?”

That distinction is especially important with ready-made medical compression garments.

The goal is not identical tightness everywhere. The goal is appropriate compression where it is clinically required, while maintaining a safe and comfortable overall fit.
