One thing we've learnt over more than 20 years at Alpha Health Malaysia is that this misconception isn't limited to patients. It can happen to doctors, surgeons, nurses and clinic staff too. And that's completely understandable. After all, they're human.

Like everyone else, when they see a label marked Medium, Large or XL, their minds naturally compare it with everyday clothing sizes. We've all spent our lives buying T-shirts, dresses and jeans where those letters generally represent how "big" or "small" someone is.

Medical-grade compression garments are different.

The letters on the label are simply manufacturer size codes. They are not a measurement of the patient's body, and they certainly aren't a judgement about someone's weight or appearance.

For example, a patient who wears Medium jeans may genuinely require an XL medical compression garment because the garment has been engineered to fit a particular combination of waist, hip and thigh measurements while delivering the correct therapeutic compression.

Likewise, another patient who normally buys Large clothing may only need a Medium compression garment because their body measurements fall within that manufacturer's Medium sizing chart.

Neither patient is "larger" or "smaller." They're simply different body shapes.
