Medical Compression Garments Are Not Fashion Sizes: Why Proper Measurement Matters

"I'm NOT a Large!"

A few years ago, we had a patient who was absolutely convinced we had made a mistake.

After taking all of her measurements, we told her she would need a Large medical compression garment. Her expression changed immediately.

"There is no way I'm a Large!" she said.

"I only wear Medium jeans. You've measured me wrong."

No matter how many times we explained that compression garments are sized differently from fashion clothing, she simply couldn't accept it. She was convinced the label meant we thought she was "bigger" than she really was. So we sat down with her and showed her exactly how the sizing worked. We explained that the manufacturer's Large simply matched her waist, hip and thigh measurements. If the same measurements had been labelled "Size Banana," then "Banana" would have been the correct size!

The letter on the tag wasn't describing her.

It was describing the garment.

Eventually, she agreed to try it on.

A few minutes later, she walked out of the fitting room smiling.

"I can't believe it... it fits perfectly."

The garment wasn't too loose. It wasn't too tight. It provided exactly the medical compression she needed for her recovery.

Before leaving, she laughed and said,

"I suppose I owe you an apology. I was arguing with the measuring tape!"

We smiled and replied,

"The measuring tape usually wins."

That conversation has stayed with us because it happens more often than people realise.

Many patients naturally compare the label on a medical compression garment with the label in their wardrobe. But they're two completely different sizing systems.
