What Is a Breast Prosthesis? 2 Types Explained
When we hear the word prosthesis, we often think of an artificial leg, an artificial eye, or another artificial replacement for a body part.
But did you know that there are also two different types of breast prostheses?
One is placed inside the body through surgery. The other is worn externally, without surgery.
Both are breast prostheses. Both serve a purpose. And both offer women options for restoring the shape and appearance of the breast.
First, What Exactly Is a Prosthesis?
A prosthesis is an artificial replacement for a body part that is missing or has been lost.
For example, an artificial leg replaces a missing leg, while an artificial eye helps restore the appearance of an eye that has been removed.
The same idea applies to the breast. A breast prosthesis is an artificial device designed to replace or restore the shape and appearance of a breast.
However, not all breast prostheses are used in the same way.
1. Internal Breast Prosthesis: The Breast Implant
You may already be familiar with breast implants.
A breast implant is a type of prosthesis that is placed inside the body through surgery. It may be used for breast enlargement or to reconstruct a breast after a mastectomy, an operation to remove the breast.
Once implanted, it sits inside the body.
For women who choose surgical breast reconstruction, a breast implant can be an important option for restoring breast shape.
2. External Breast Prosthesis: Worn Without Surgery
An external breast prosthesis is also an artificial breast replacement, but instead of being placed inside the body, it is worn externally.
It is particularly useful for women who have undergone a mastectomy and wish to restore the appearance of their breast without further surgery.
The prosthesis is placed inside a specially designed pocketed bra, which holds it securely in position.
When properly fitted, it helps restore the breast's shape beneath clothing and can help create a balanced appearance.
It can be removed whenever needed and worn as part of everyday life.
External breast prostheses are available in different shapes, sizes, and weights to suit different women and their individual needs.
Two Types. Different Approaches. Both Have Their Place.
So, what is the difference?
Internal breast prosthesis: A breast implant placed inside the body through surgery.
External breast prosthesis: An artificial breast form worn outside the body, held securely by a suitable pocketed bra.
Neither option is automatically right for every woman. Each offers a different approach, and the most suitable choice depends on individual circumstances, preferences, medical advice, and lifestyle.
For some women, surgical reconstruction is the right choice. For others, an external breast prosthesis offers the solution they prefer.
The important thing is to understand that both options exist and that women deserve to know about them.
